'Think not that I come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not
come to destroy, but to FULFIL' [matt5:17].
'Do we then make void the
law through faith? God forbid: yea we ESTABLISH the law' [Rom3:31].
For proper understanding of this subject, we need to understand the
meaning of 'FULFIL and 'ESTABLISH'.
To fulfil is to actualise, to
achieve or to bring to completion. While to establish is to
confirm, to validate or to prove.
1. Under the dispensation of the law,
whenever someone commits sin, he/she would kill an animal after
which, the blood was sprinkled in order to remit(cancel) the sin
committed, pacify and appease God and also to revoke God's anger.
Therefore the Law is of the notion that: "For mankind to be at peace
with God and for mankind to have his sins forgiven and remitted, there
has to be shedding of blood.
Christ came to FULFIL, actualize and
achieve this selfsame purpose, for which the Law was set up.
The law
was set up with a good motive -to make peace between God and man and to remit(cancel) the sins of mankind[Rom7:12] but the Law could not achieve this objective, owing to the fact that it was weak [Rom8:3].
"For it was not possible that the blood of bulls, and of goats should
take away(remit) sins"(Heb10:4).
But Christ(who is the perfect lamb
that taketh away the sins of the world) came to fulfil, actualize,
achieve the original purpose for which the Law was set up.
He took the place of bulls and goats, and his blood was shed for the remission of sins and to bring reconciliation betweem God and man, instead of the
blood of animals.
He did not come to destroy the Law but to fulfil,
actualize and achieve the purpose for which it was set up.
2. Our faith in the atoning work of Christ done on the cross, does not make the Law void and invalid. Instead, it establishes, confirms, validates and produce a proof or evidence that the Law is right and true.
How?
The Law affirms that there can be no forgiveness and remission of sins without shedding of blood, Christ confirmed, validated and proved this by shedding his blood.
Therefore our faith in the atoning work of Christ, simply agrees with the affirmation of the Law(no remission of sins without shedding of blood).
