an ash is the powdery residue left after the burning of a substance.
Putting on of sackclothes and pouring of ashes on one's head was a
way of expressing remorse, penitence, repentance, deep regret, guilt
and contriteness under the diapensation of the Old Covenant.
God forgave a great number of folks during the days of the old
Covenant regardless of the gravity of their offence, simply because,
they penitently wore sackclothes and put on ashes on their heads.
God was displeased with King Ahab, after Naboth's death and He
promised to punish him and wipe out his posterity. Do you know God
swallowed back His words just because Ahab tore his clothes, put on a
sackcloth and fasted. Here is what God said: 'Seest thou how Ahab
HUMBLETH hImself before me? because he HUMBLETH himself before me, I
will not bring the evil in his days but in his son's days will I bring
the evil upon his house'(1Kings21:29). Even King and the people of
Nineveh did same.
THE IMPLICATION OF PUTTING ON SACK CLOTHES AND ASHES
'Sackclothes and ashes' is a phrase used to describe penitence,
remorse, guilt and deep regret. Under this dipensation, we no longer
longer put on sackcloth and ashes(in the literal sense), however
whenever we go against God's will' we must:
1.HUMBLE OURSELVES: It took humility for King Ahab to rent(tear into
shreds) his royal robe and opted for a sackcloth and ashes instead. An
arrogant fellow can never put on sackclothes nor pour ashes on his
head, by implication; It takes humility to admit that you are a
sinner, It takes humility for a renowned Pastor, minister or leader,
who erred to tell God: 'I have sinned', 'I have gone astray'(Just as
David did). If you are too big to put on a sackcloth
and pour ashes on your head(you don't admit that you are a sinner)
then you do not deserve forgiveness and pardon from God.
2. FEEL AND EXPRESS REMORSE: You can't put on a sackcloth If all was
well with you, On the other hand, you can't have your costly and
precious array(cloth) on,thus merrying and partying(while you are
suppose to be in your sackcloth mourning), when you know you are God's
black book, by implication, It is inhumane and barbaric to keep on
feasting and merrying when your conscience and God's word proves to
you beyond reasonable doubt that you are sinner. You must
sincerely(not hypocritically) feel and show remorse, guilty, regret
and then turn a new leave.
EXAMINE YOURSELF TODAY,GO TO GOD IN SACK CLOTH AND ASHES(by admitting,
confessing and repenting of your sins, and believing in your heart
that Christ died and rose to remit to your sins ) AND HE WILL
DEFINITELY PARDON.
