Having the knowledge and understanding that "...without holiness no
man shall see the Lord"[Heb.12:14], it is therefore imperative to
understand the concept of Holiness and also how to attain this great
height.
WHAT IS HOLINESS? AND HOW DO I BECOME HOLY?
To be holy simply means to be pure, godly, sinless, righteous,
saintly, virtuous and God-fearing.
We must understand that it is the will, demand, and desire of God that
we should be holy['...be ye holy for I am holy(1Peter1:16)].
We can't say we are sitting with Christ in heavenly places(as some do
affirm), If we are not living the life of heaven here on earth.
Christ not only died for our justification and vindication, He not
only died that all our past sins can be forgiven or for us to be
counted righteous only, but chiefly He died so that we can be holy,
blameless, sinless and pure
"...Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for it, that he
might SANCTIFY and CLEANSE it with the washing of water by the word.
That he might present to himself a GLORIOUS CHURCH, NOT HAVING SPOT,
or WRINKLE OR ANY SUCH THING: but that it should be HOLY and WITHOUT
BLEMISH"[Eph.5:26-27].
Christ wants us to be holy that was why He gave Himself for us,
therefore If we practise and live in sin, telling ourselves everyday
that we are sinners saved by grace(even after salvation), we are
evidently making His death for us useless and we are simply decieving
ourselves.
CONSECRATION AND SANCTIFICATION MAKES HOLINESS POSSIBLE
If holiness of life must be attained, It must start with a desire, it
must preoccupy our mind and as a result of that, you want to set
yourself apart unto the Lord,
'LORD I'VE MADE UP MY MIND NOT TO WATCH PORNOGRAPHY'
'I WON'T ENTERTAIN THOSE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AGAIN'
'FROM TODAY I'M YOURS, YOU GAVE YOURSELF FOR ME, NOW I'M SETTING
MYSELF APART FOR YOU'. This is what we call 'CONSECRATION' together
with 'MORTIFICATION'.
Since you've made up your mind to separate yourself unto the
Lord[CONSECRATION], you suppress, mortify and subdue every sinful
urge, thought, and desire as they come[MORTIFICATION].
Paul the Apostle, as we all know, separated himself unto the Lord and
to the Gospel[CONSECRATION][Rom1:1] and as a result of his
consecration, he said '... I keep under my body, and bring it into
subjection(discipline)...'[This is MORTIFICATION).
Most christians, who have made up their minds to consecrate themselves
unto the Lord, find themselves struggling while trying to mortify and
suppress filthy thoughts and ungodly desires.
This why we need to pray and ask for SANCTIFICATION.
SANCTIFICATION means 'to make holy'. If God sanctifies us, we become
quickened, vivified and enliven. We no longer struggle to
mortify(suppress) sinful thoughts, urge and desires, Consecrating and
bridling our desires becomes easier because the sinful Adamic nature
has been dealt with.
Christ, onseeing the spiritual frailties of the early Apostles saw the
need to pray for their 'SANCTIFICATION(John17:17), After this
prayer, their love for God grew,Peter, who abadoned his ministry for
fishing[John21:3] was keen to fill the vacancy created by Judas
Isacriot, He was willing to serve God to the fullest. This was because
their hearts had been circumcised(sanctified)[Duet.30:6, Rom3:29] and
God's word, which brings the fear of God and hatred for sin has been
written in the fleshly tables of their heart[Heb.8:10-11].
We will end up living a struggling, inconstitent christian life, If
all we want to do is to continously mortify and discipline our flesh
all by our might alone without asking God for SANCTIFICATION.
If we want God to sanctify us, we must
1. Desire to be holy, separating ourselves unto the Lord and
constantly mortifying(suppresing) the desires of the flesh.
2. Asking God, relentlessly in heartfelt prayers to sanctify us and
believe that it will be done.
[Before you take this step, you need to have repented of your sins and
believe on the Lord Jesus].
NOTE: Sanctification doesn't stop temptation from coming to us,
instead it empowers us to say ' NO' to sinful thoughts, urge and
suggestions, without struggling to do so.
